Have the Bones of Jesus Been Found?

www.apologeticspress.org
by Kyle Butt, M.A.

Simcha Jacobovici, a television director, and movie director James Cameron (of Titanic fame) have teamed up to produce a television documentary for Discovery Channel titled “The Jesus Family Tomb.” In this production, Jacobovici suggests that the real tomb of Jesus has been discovered, complete with ossuaries for His body, Mary Magdalene’s body, His mother Mary’s body, and the body of Judah, allegedly the son of Jesus. This outlandish claim, although supposedly backed by scientific and historical “evidence,” is another sad example of senseless hype surrounding baseless claims about Jesus Christ.

The available historic evidence overwhelmingly destroys the false assertions made by Jacobovici. First, the idea that Jesus’ bones were buried would contradict the most historically accurate book ever written—the Bible. As Newsweek writers Miller and Chen wrote: “Good sense, and the Bible, still the best existing historical record of the life of Jesus of Nazareth, argue against Jacobovici’s claims” (2007). Indeed they do. The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the most historically documented event in ancient history (see Butt, 2002). The New Testament documents have been examined with a scrutiny beyond any applied to other historical books, and their authenticity and reliability have dumbfounded the most skeptical observers. With one voice, the books of the New Testament declare that Jesus Christ was buried in a borrowed tomb, rose three days after His death, and ascended to heaven, leaving no bones behind to be buried in an ossuary.

Furthermore, besides the fact that Jacobovici’s idea goes against the Bible, other details militate against the tomb being Jesus’ (not that any are needed). For instance, the names on the ossuary were very common. In fact, almost one-fourth of women in Jerusalem at the time would most likely have been named Mary or some derivative form of the name (Miller and Chen, 2007). In addition, the tomb is of a wealthy family and was located in Jerusalem. But Jesus’ family was poor from Nazareth. As Alan Segal, religion professor at Barnard College, stated: “Why would Jesus’ family have a tomb outside of Jerusalem if they were from Nazareth? Why would they have a tomb if they were poor?” (as quoted in Miller and Chen).

In truth, this latest “discovery” is little more than an attempt to cash in on the hype created by Dan Brown (author of The Da Vinci Code) and his ilk. It is so devoid of truth and legitimate historical scholarship that it is more of a science fiction film than a documentary. This and a host of future attempts to cast doubt on the biblical narratives will come and go, but rest assured that “the Word of the Lord endures forever.”

What church did Jesus HIMSELF establish?

Ripped this from http://church-of-christ.org/church-of-christ/JMB.html

Jesus died for his church, the bride of Christ. (Ephesians 5:25-33) Man throughout history has corrupted the church that Christ died for through denominationalism, by adding man-made laws to the scriptures, and by following creeds other than the Holy Bible.

It is possible today, to be obedient to the will of Christ. Christians can resolve to restore the church to being the church of the New Testament. (Acts 2:41-47)

In Bible times, the church is called:

* The temple of God (1 Corinthians 3:16)
* The bride of Christ (Ephesians 5:22-32)
* The body of Christ (Colossians 1:18,24; Ephesians 1:22-23)
* The kingdom of God's son (Colossians 1:13)
* The house of God (1 Timothy 3:15)
* The church of God (1 Corinthians 1:2)
* The church of the first-born (Hebrews 12:23)
* The church of the Lord (Acts 20:2)
* The churches of Christ (Romans 16:16)

The church is:

* Built by Jesus Christ (Matthew 16:13-1)
* Purchased by the blood of Christ (Acts 20:2)
* Built on Jesus Christ as the only foundation (1 Corinthians 3:11)
* Not built on Peter, Paul, or any other man (1 Corinthians 1:12-13)
* Composed of the saved, who are added to it by the Lord who saves them (Acts 2:47)

Members of the church are called:

* Members of Christ (1 Corinthians 6:15; 1 Corinthians 12:27; Romans 12:4-5)
* Disciples of Christ (Acts 6:1,7; Acts 11:26)
* Believers (Acts 5:14; 2 Corinthians 6:15)
* Saints (Acts 9:13; Romans 1:7; Philippians 1:1)
* Priests (1 Peter 2:5,9; Revelation 1:6)
* Children of God (Galatians 3:26-27; 1 John 3:1-2)
* Christians (Acts 11:26; Acts 26:28; 1 Peter 4:16)

The local church has:

* Elders (also called bishops and pastors) who oversee and tend the flock (1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9; 1 Peter 5:1-4)
* Deacons, who serve the church (1 Timothy 3:8-13; Philippians 1:1)
* Evangelists (preachers, ministers) who teach and proclaim the word of God (Ephesians 4:11; 1 Timothy 4:13-16; 2 Timothy 4:1-5)
* Members, who love the Lord and each other (Philippians 2:1-5)
* Autonomy, and is bound to other local churches only by the common faith shared (Jude 3; Galatians 5:1)

The Lord Jesus Christ:

* Loved the church (Ephesians 5:25)
* Shed his blood for the church (Acts 20:2)
* Established the church (Matthew 16:1)
* Added saved people to the church (Acts 2:47)
* Is the head of the church (Ephesians 1:22-23; Ephesians 5:23)
* Will save the church (Acts 2:47; Ephesians 5:23)

Man did not:

* Purpose the church (Ephesians 3:10-11)
* Purchase the church (Acts 20:28; Ephesians 5:25)
* Name its members (Isaiah 56:5; Isaiah 62:2; Acts 11:26; 1 Peter 4:16)
* Add people to the church (Acts 2:47; 1 Corinthians 12:1)
* Give the church its doctrine (Galatians 1:8-11; 2 John 9-11)

To enter the church, you must:

* Believe in Jesus Christ (Hebrews 11:6; John 8:24; Acts 16:31)
* Repent of your sins (Turn away from your sins) (Luke 13:3; Acts 2:38; Acts 3:19; Acts 17:30)
* Confess faith in Jesus (Matthew 10:32; Acts 8:37; Romans 10:9-10)
* Be baptized into the saving blood of Jesus Matthew 28:19; Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38; Acts 10:48; Acts 22:16)

Baptism requires:

* Much water (John 3:23; Acts 10:47)
* Going down into the water (Acts 8:36-3)
* A burial in water (Romans 6:3-4; Colossians 2:12)
* A resurrection (Acts 8:39; Romans 6:4; Colossians 2:12)
* A birth (John 3:3-5; Romans 6:3-6)
* A washing (Acts 22:16; Hebrews 10:22)

By baptism:

* You are saved from sins (Mark 16:16 1 Peter 3:21)
* You have remission of sins (Acts 2:3)
* Sins are washed away by the blood of Christ (Acts 22:16; Hebrews 9:22; Hebrews 10:22; 1 Peter 3:21)
* You enter into the church (1 Corinthians 12:13; Acts 2:41,47)
* You enter into Christ (Galatians 3:26-27; Romans 6:3-4)
* You put on Christ and become a child of God (Galatians 3:26-27)
* You are born again, a new creature (Romans 6:3-4; 2 Corinthians 5:17)
* You walk in newness of life (Romans 6:3-6)
* You obey Christ (Mark 16:15-16; Acts 10:48; 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9)

The faithful church will:

* Worship in spirit and in truth (John 4:23-24)
* Meet on the first day of the week (Acts 20:7; Hebrews 10:25)
* Pray (James 5:16; Acts 2:42; 1 Timothy 2:1-2; 1 Thessalonians 5:17)
* Sing, making melody with the heart (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16)
* Eat the Lord's supper on the first day of the week (Acts 2:42 20:7; Matthew 26:26-30; 1 Corinthians 11:20-32)
* Give, liberally and cheerfully (1 Corinthians 16:1-2; 2 Corinthians 8:1-5; 2 Corinthians 9:6-8)

In New Testament times there was:

* One family of God (Ephesians 3:15; 1 Timothy 3:15)
* One kingdom of Christ (Matthew 16:18-19; Colossians 1:13-14)
* One body of Christ (Colossians 1:18; Ephesians 1:22-23; Ephesians 4:4)
* One bride of Christ (Romans 7:1-7; Ephesians 5:22-23)
* One church of Christ (Matthew 16:18; Ephesians 1:22-23; Ephesians 4:4-6)

The same church today:

* Is guided by the same word (1 Peter 1:22-25; 2 Timothy 3:16-17)
* Contends for the one faith (Jude 3; Ephesians 4:5)
* Pleads for unity of all believers (John 17:20-21; Ephesians 4:4-6)
* Is not a denomination (1 Corinthians 1:10-13; Ephesians 4:1-6)
* Is faithful to Christ (Luke 6:46; Revelation 2:10; Mark 8:3)
* Wears the name of Christ (Romans 16:16; Acts 11:26; 1 Peter 4:16)

You can be a member of this church:

* By doing what people 1900 years ago (Acts 2:36-47)
* Without being in any denomination (Acts 2:47; 1 Corinthians 1:10-13)

A child of God:

* Can be lost (1 Corinthians 9:27; 1 Corinthians 10:12; Galatians 5:4; Hebrews 3:12-19)
* But is given a law of pardon (Acts 8:22; James 5:16)
* Is constantly cleansed by the blood of Christ as he walks in the light of God (1 Peter 2:9-10; 1 John 1:5-10)

Men's Ministry No Answer To Women's Affairs

Ok, I saw something on TV the other night that mentioned something about the Ministry for Womans Affairs.

Where is the Ministry for Mens Affairs?

Well, there isnt one.

Why not? Who knows. I think it is another example of reverse sexism occuring in our society.

I dont care that women have been treated differently in the workplace back in the day. That wasnt my fault. It may not have been right, but I didnt do it. I hear that women still get paid less in the workplace than men do and no, thats not right, pay rates should be based on your ability. But quite frankly, since the abolishment of collective contracts, each and everyone of us has the opportunity to negotiate our own wages...if you negotiate a stink wage..thats your problem. Individual contracts baby.

Personally, I think women should be able to stay at home and manage the household. I want my wife at home raising our daughter. Not the local day care center where we have to put her because mum has to go to work a 40 hour week cause dad doesnt bring in enough.

Anyhoo, this is the latest article about this subject that I could find on the mighty intertron.

http://www.act.org.nz/news-article.aspx?id=26054
ACT New Zealand Women’s Affairs Spokesman Heather Roy today invited Minister John ‘Macho Man’ Tamihere to join with her in calling for the Ministry of Women’s Affairs to be abolished.

“Mr Tamihere is right: Kiwi men are not treated the same as Kiwi women. But, rather than setting up a Ministry of Men’s Affairs, we should even things up by simply scrapping the Women’s Affairs Ministry,” Mrs Roy said.

“As the Minister said: we have Ministries for Women, Youth, and Horse Racing – even a Commission to tell us what a family is, what it includes and what it should do. The last thing New Zealand needs is yet another taxpayer-funded talkfest to tell us how to live our lives.

“The Women’s Affairs Ministry does nothing for women but tell them that the white, middle-class heterosexual male is to blame for everything – all the while treating women with patronising sympathy and telling them they need closer relationships with the Government.

“The reality is that no one needs a closer relationship with Government. Like men, women are doing well on their own and should be left to continue. While a little mis-guided, Mr Tamihere is on the right track – I would be more than happy to meet with him to discuss his role in getting rid of this politically correct feminist waste of taxpayers’ money,” Mrs Roy said.

Evolved or designed?

Its funny. On TV tonight was a documenatry about the human eye.

The opening lines said something like, "Tonight we are going to look at what they eye has evolved into"...or something or other.

Then, throughout the program, they talk about what an odd/interesting/clever design.

????

Make up your mind guys, did it evolve or was it designed?

What must we do to be saved?

What must we do to be saved?

1: Hear the Word.

Romans 10:14-17
14How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of
those who bring good news!"

16But not all the Israelites accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed our message?" 17Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.

Footnotes:

1. Romans 10:15 Isaiah 52:7
2. Romans 10:16 Isaiah 53:1

2: Believe the Word.

John 3:16-18
16"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,[1] that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not
believed in the name of God's one and only Son.[2]

Footnotes:

1. John 3:16 Or his only begotten Son
2. John 3:18 Or God's only begotten Son

John 6:43-51
43"Stop grumbling among yourselves," Jesus answered. 44"No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day. 45It is written in the Prophets: 'They will all be taught by God.'[1] Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me. 46No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. 47I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life. 48I am the bread of life. 49Your forefathers ate the manna in the desert, yet they died. 50But here is
the bread that comes down from heaven, which a man may eat and not die.
51I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world."

Footnotes:

1. John 6:45 Isaiah 54:13

Hebrews 11:6
6And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

James 2:19
19You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.

These passages beg the question: Can believing in God alone save you?

3: Repent.

Repentance is a change of mind; this will result in a chnage of actions.
It is more than being sorry, it is a changing.

Acts 17:30-31
30In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. 31For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead."

2 Corinthians 7:8-10
8Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it. Though I did regret it—I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while— 9yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God
intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. 10Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.

4: Confess faith in Christ.

Those who truly believes Jesus is the Saviour should be willing to confess Him as Lord (Master) of their lives.

Romans 10:8-13
8But what does it say? "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,"[1] that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: 9That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. 11As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame."[2] 12For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."[3]

2. Romans 10:11 Isaiah 28:16

5: Baptism

The priginal word "baptism" in Greek is "baptizo". It is defined as "immerse" or "to dip".

a: For what reason do we need to be baptised for?

Acts 2:38
38Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Mark 16:16
16Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

Acts 22:15-16
15You will be his witness to all men of what you have seen and heard.
16And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.'

b: In whose name were they told to baptise people into?

Matthew 28:18-20
18Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[1] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything I have
commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

Footnotes:

1. Matthew 28:19 Or into; see Acts 8:16; 19:5; Romans 6:3; 1 Cor. 1:13;
10:2 and Gal. 3:27.

Acts 22:15-16
15You will be his witness to all men of what you have seen and heard.
16And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.'

c: What goft do you receive in your baptism?

Acts 2:37-39
37When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?"

38Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call."

d: What does the Holy Spirit guarntee us?

Ephesians 1:13-14
13And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession—to the praise of his glory.

e: Do all believers need to be baptised?

Matthew 3:13-17
The Baptism of Jesus
13Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.
14But John tried to deter him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?"

15Jesus replied, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness." Then John consented.

16As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. 17And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."

Examples of baptised believers:
Acts 16:29-34 (Jailer)
Acts 8:30-39 (Eunuch)
Acts 16:13-15 (Lydia)
Acts 8:12 (Samaria)
Acts 22:1-12 (Paul)

Please note that all the baptised people were:
1: Adults - searching/desire
2: had to make a decision on what they heard
3: believed in God
4: did something about what they needed to do

What word is used to describe the action of baptism?

Colossians 2:11-12
11In him you were also circumcised, in the putting off of the sinful nature,[1] not with a circumcision done by the hands of men but with the circumcision done by Christ, 12having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.

Footnotes:

1. Colossians 2:11 Or the flesh

Romans 6:1-4
Romans 6
Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ
1What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

What happens after you are baptised?
and who was adding to their numbers tose who were being saved?

Acts 2:41-47

Listen to this passage
View commentary related to this passage

41Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.
The Fellowship of the Believers
42They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. 44All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. 46Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.
And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

How can someone see the Kindgdon of God?

John 3:3-8
3In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again."

4"How can a man be born when he is old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb to be born!"

5Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. 6Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.' 8The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit."

So, what are the results of baptism?

"sons of God", "saves you"
Galatians 3:26-29
Sons of God
26You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, 27for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
28There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

1 Peter 3:18-22
18For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, 19through whom[1] also he went and preached to the spirits in prison 20who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, 21and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge[2] of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22who has gone into heaven and is at God's right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to
him.

"One Body"
1 Corinthians 12:12-13
12The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. 13For we were all baptized by[1] one Spirit into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.

"No Condemnation; "children of God; Heirs"

12Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation—but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. 13For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, 14because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship.[1] And by him we cry, "Abba,[2] Father." 16The Spirit himself
testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. 17Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

2 Corinthians 5:16-21
16So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! 18All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through
Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.
20We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God. 21God made him who had no sin to be sin[1] for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

3Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. 4For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5he[1] predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— 6to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. 7In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace 8that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding.

1My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for[1] the sins of the whole world.

"Not be hurt by the Second Death"
Revelation 2:11
11He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
He who overcomes will not be hurt at all by the second death.

6: Commitment
A disciple of Christ, must live faithfully to God.

Romans 6:8-14
8Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. 10The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.

11In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. 14For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.

Galatians 2:20
20I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

1 John 2:15-17
Do Not Love the World
15Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world.
17The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.

Hebrews 10:23-31
23Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. 25Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

26If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. 28Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of
grace? 30For we know him who said, "It is mine to avenge; I will repay,"[1] and again, "The Lord will judge his people."[2] 31It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Colossians 1:23-25
23if you continue in your faith, established and firm, not moved from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.
Paul's Labor for the Church
24Now I rejoice in what was suffered for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ's afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the church. 25I have become its servant by the commission God gave me to present to you the word of God in its fullness—

1 Corinthians 15:58
58Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

2 Peter 1:5-11
5For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. 8For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins.

10Therefore, my brothers, be all the more eager to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never fall, 11and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Revelation 2:10
10Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life.

Conclusion

Colossians 3:1-17
Colossians 3
Rules for Holy Living
1Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4When Christ, who is your[1] life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

5Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.[2] 7You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10and have put on the
new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.

12Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
13Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

15Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude
in your hearts to God. 17And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

This succinct view of Gods plan for our salvation was kindly provided to me by some friends of mine at the South Auckland Church of Christ. I think the true beauty of it is that it is simple. Perhaps not easy to implement, but simple to comprehend. There are no convoluted mysteries
that will trick the unwary believer. Its all fairly easy to understand.

Alcohol prohibition.

In almost all countries in the world, adults are allowed to buy and consume alcohol with very little restriction (although there are often laws about the exact hours that bars and shops are allowed to sell alcohol, and laws against drinking and driving). This is in marked contrast to the legal situation with regard to other mind-altering (or ‘psycho-active’) drugs such as cannabis, cocaine, ecstasy, acid, and heroin. However, the experience of ‘Prohibition’ in the USA in the 1920s and 1930s, when there was a huge black market in alcohol run by a powerful criminal underworld, makes most people very wary of trying that solution again. What balance should be struck between the need to protect society on the one hand and the need to preserve individual liberties on the other.

Alcohol is just as potentially addictive as many illegal drugs. Those who do become addicted to alcohol often lose their marriages, jobs, families, even their lives. A large proportion of homeless people find themselves in that position as a result of their alcoholism. Any drug this addictive and destructive should be illegal.

Alcohol is a contributory factor to a huge proportion of crimes. Exact figures vary from country to country, but in many countries alcohol is a contributory factor in 60-70% of violent crimes, including child abuse, domestic violence, sexual assault, and murder. Alcohol is far and away the leading cause of public disorder, street fights, etc. In short, alcohol is one of the prime causes of violence and crime in modern society, and its banning would reduce the incidence of these crimes at a strike.

Despite the fact that advertising campaigns such as those run in the UK over the past 30 years have been successful in reducing the incidence of drink driving, this success has not been mirrored in all countries. And even where it has, deaths and serious injuries caused by drunk drivers still run to the thousands each year. This is an unacceptable situation - alcohol should simply be banned.

We need consistency in our drug laws. If cannabis, which is not very addictive and which results in virtually no violent crime or public disorder, needs to be banned because of its mind-altering effects, then how much more so should alcohol be banned.

It is true that currently thousands of people are employed by the alcoholic drinks industry. However the fact that an immoral industry employs a lot of people is never a good argument to keep that immoral industry going (similar arguments apply to the cases of prostitution, arms dealing, fox hunting, battery farming, etc.) Instead, a gradual process would have to be implemented, which would include governments providing funding for training for alternative careers.

It is also true that tax revenues would be lost if alcohol were banned. However, again, this is not a principled reason to reject the proposition, simply a practical problem. It should be pointed out that governments would save a huge amount of money on police and health spending (through the reduction in crime and alcohol-related illness) which would go at least some of the way to offsetting the decreased tax revenues.
